IT Weekly Roundup, March 17

From the business wires this week: an Exchange search tool, Windows backup products, and SQL Server monitoring and managing tools.

Sherpa Software yesterday announced the latest release of its automated e-discovery tool, Discovery Attender for Exchange 2.0. The new version stores search results in their own databases, eliminating previous database size constraints. Related searches are grouped together as projects for portability and easy viewing from multiple installations. Other enhancements have been made to the search wizard and engine.

Acronis released an update to its Acronis True Image backup solutions for Windows-based servers and workstations. Among the new features are the abilities to restore a system to different hardware, to boot a remote computer to restore a system partition, start and stop database applications via Microsoft Volume Shadow Copy Service, and support for 64-bit Windows.

AEP Networks announced the general availability of AEP Net Remote, a scalable solution for remote secure access to data with support for various applications including Voice over IP and Video over IP.

IS Decisions released SweepDeployer, a freeware solution for remotely executing malware removal via tools from Microsoft, McAfee or Trend Micro.

RackForce Hosting Inc. launched its new Virtual Private Server based on Microsoft Windows Server 2003 and Virtual Server 2003 R2. The latest addition to the RackForce Dynamic Dedicated Server product line, called dds200-W, is powered by dual-Intel Xeon-processor servers. The package includes Windows Server 2003 Web Edition, a 10Mbps connection, Plesk for Windows (optional) and FortiGate Firewall Intrusion Protection.

Idera released new versions of two products for monitoring and managing SQL Server 2005. SQL Diagnostic Manager 4.1 provides real-time performance monitoring and diagnostics, while SQLschedule 2.5 allows admins to manage SQL Server jobs in an 64-bit enterprise environment.

Never mind that Microsoft released a Community Technology Preview of SQL Server 2005 Service Pack 1 on Wednesday, the public loves gossip. A Microsoft employee claimed on a company blog site that Vista was going to ship November, a month later than the previously rumored October timeframe. Elsewhere, an anonymous source told Game Informer magazine the next installment of the popular Xbox video game Halo won't be called Halo 3 but Halo Forerunner. To both tantalizing bits of hearsay, Microsoft said it "doesn't comment on rumors or speculation." Oh well.
