Microsoft Makes SQL Server Migration to Azure Virtual Machines Generally Available
Microsoft has announced the general availability of SQL Server migration to Azure Virtual Machines through Azure Migrate, providing organizations with an integrated path for moving on-premises SQL Server workloads to Azure. SQL Server on Azure Virtual Machines becomes a fully supported production destination within the Azure Arc migration experience.
Organizations often operate across on-premises, hybrid and cloud environments while balancing application dependencies, operational requirements and modernization goals. SQL Server migration enabled by Azure Arc simplifies this process by bringing migration activities into a single experience in the Azure portal.
A key benefit of SQL Server migration enabled by Azure Arc is that the entire migration lifecycle is managed from a single tool in the Azure portal. This offers users assess migration readiness, select a migration target, configure migration settings, monitor migration progress, validate results and perform final cutover. Migration to SQL Server on Azure Virtual Machines follows the same operational model already available for Azure SQL Managed Instance migration scenarios.
The service combines discovery, assessment and migration capabilities within Azure Migrate, allowing IT teams to evaluate existing SQL Server deployments, identify compatibility issues and migrate databases to Azure virtual machines from a unified management experience. The offering is intended to simplify modernization projects while reducing migration complexity and downtime. Azure Blob Storage serves as the intermediary staging location between source and target systems.
Microsoft said the generally available capability supports organizations that want to move existing SQL Server applications to the cloud without extensive application changes. The integrated workflow is designed to help enterprises plan migrations, assess readiness and monitor progress throughout the transition process.
To support efficient data movement and restore operations, both the Azure Blob Storage account and the target SQL Server on Azure Virtual Machines must reside in the same Azure region. Azure Arc performs the final synchronization by applying the last uploaded backup and bringing the target database online.
