Microsoft Introduces Windows Ready Print and Modernized Driver Selection

Microsoft has announced Windows Ready Print, a new printing initiative designed to modernize how printers are deployed and managed in Windows environments. The program is intended to help organizations streamline printer installation and compatibility by reducing dependence on traditional manufacturer-supplied drivers. As an evolved version of Modern Print Platform, Windows Ready Print highlights a streamlined, dependable printing experience built for modern Windows environments.

The core of Windows Ready Print is a transition away from legacy, third-party driver-based workflows toward modern, standards-based printing with IPP (Internet Printing Protocol) using the Windows inbox IPP printer driver. Users can also enable default install printers using Windows Ready Print, which allows new printer installations to default to the Windows inbox IPP printer driver when supported.

The company also unveiled changes to driver selection in Windows, giving administrators greater control over how print drivers are identified and applied. Microsoft said the updates are designed to improve consistency across devices while supporting a broader range of printers through standardized driver models. Microsoft said the update will start in July 2026, when new printer installations will default to Windows Ready Print where supported, enabling a simpler and more reliable setup experience.
