Microsoft Introduces Cert Manager Support for Azure Arc-Enabled Kubernetes
Microsoft has introduced support for cert-manager in Azure Arc-enabled Kubernetes, now available in public preview, to help organizations automate certificate management across distributed environments. The integration enables Kubernetes administrators to manage and renew TLS certificates using cert-manager while operating clusters connected through Azure Arc. The goal is to simplify security management for applications running across on-premises, edge and multicloud infrastructure.
Azure Arc extends Azure management capabilities to resources outside Microsoft’s cloud. By adding cert-manager support, Microsoft aims to provide a more consistent way to handle certificate lifecycle management across Kubernetes deployments. The extension packages the open-source cert-manager and trust-manager into a managed Arc extension with Microsoft support. The extension bundles two CNCF-graduated projects, including cert-manager and trust-manager, into a single Arc-K8s extension that you install once per cluster, addressing three major recurring problems noted in hybrid and edge environments.
The feature is intended to reduce manual configuration and improve operational reliability for containerized applications that depend on secure communication between services. As enterprises expand Kubernetes adoption across hybrid environments, certificate management has become increasingly complex. If you’re already running Azure IoT Operations or Azure Monitor on Arc-enabled clusters, the extension handles TLS between those services with minimal setup.
