Azure SQL Managed Instance Gains General Availability of SQL Server 2025 Update Policy

Microsoft has announced the general availability of the SQL Server 2025 update policy for Azure SQL Managed Instance, providing customers with expanded control over how and when new engine capabilities are introduced. The update policy is designed to help organizations balance access to the latest SQL Server innovations with operational stability requirements. Some major updates include optimized locking, mirroring in Fabric, invoking HTTP REST endpoints and manual backup to Azure Blob Storage, among others. A full list of policy updates can be found in the policy documentation here.

Azure SQL Managed Instance allows customers to run near–full SQL Server compatibility in a managed platform-as-a-service model. With SQL Server 2025 bringing new features and performance enhancements, enterprises have sought clearer governance around update timing, particularly for mission-critical workloads. The GA release enables organizations to align update adoption with internal testing cycles and compliance policies, reducing unexpected changes while maintaining cloud agility. For database administrators and IT leaders, the update reinforces Microsoft’s effort to provide enterprise-grade control within its managed database services.
