Microsoft Introduces Copilot Keyboard Key, AI Mobile Apps

Microsoft is making its first major change to the standard Windows keyboard since the 1990s with the introduction of the "Copilot Key."

The new revision, which is set to be unveiled in actual hardware during next week's CES 2024 in Las Vegas, was inspired by what Microsoft saw as a growing demand for a more personal relationship with the company's AI platform. The company will start rolling out the new button on its line of Surface devices and third-party OEMs will make the revision on keyboards and laptops available soon.

"We believe it will empower people to participate in the AI transformation more easily," wrote Microsoft Consumer Chief Marketing Officer Yusuf Mehdi. "The Copilot key joins the Windows key as a core part of the PC keyboard and when pressed, the new key will invoke the Copilot in Windows experience to make it seamless to engage Copilot in your day to day."

The latest revision to the standard Windows keyboard is the first new introduction to the universal input device since the introduction of the "Windows key" three decades ago.

In other Copilot news, Microsoft has stealth dropped a Copilot mobile app for iOS and Android device during the holiday season.

Microsoft's Copilot app on mobile devices closely resembles ChatGPT, offering chatbot features, DALL-E 3-powered image generation, and text drafting for emails and documents. Notably, Copilot distinguishes itself by providing access to OpenAI's latest GPT-4 model, a feature that comes at a cost for ChatGPT users.

Microsoft first released the free app on Android's Play store in late December and it appeared a few days later on the Apple App store.
