Netcraft: 1% of ASP.NET Sites are Linux-Based

You'd think the existence of ASP.NET on a Web site would make it a safe bet that it's a Windows server, right? Not so fast.

Internet researchers at U.K.-based consultancy Netcraft find that about 1 percent of ASP.NET Internet sites on the Web are running Linux.

The way the sites work is they run on software provided by the Mono project, sponsored by open source desktop solution provider Ximian and launched in July 2001. Mono, a project named after the Spanish word for monkey, is a Linux-based implementation of the Microsoft .NET Framework. The project builds its implementation from the ECMA standards Microsoft submitted, and the core of the project is a runtime, a compiler and a set of class libraries.

"It is early days both for the Mono project and for .NET itself, and both will be hoping to grow very significantly from current levels," Netcraft noted in its December survey.
