SecureStack Takes Stab at Stopping Buffer Overflows

To secure Windows systems from buffer overflow attacks, SecureWave SA is sending forth SecureStack 1.0. The product detects when an outside party tries to execute unauthorized code and prevents the attacker from gaining control of a system.

SecureStack consists of a Windows NT/2000 kernel mode driver that ensures that data stored in memory cannot be executed by smashing the stack. The product works well in Windows NT environments, and SecureWave is working on a new version to hurdle performance problems in Windows 2000 systems.

At present, SecureStack supports only single processor machines. A detection-only version of the product is available for free from the company. Only the professional version both detects and prevents attempted buffer overflow attacks.
