Fujitsu COBOL Reconciles COBOL and the Internet

Fujitsu Software Corp. has introduced a new COBOL compiler and interface that will help organizations retain their COBOL-based legacy data while porting it to the Internet in order to meet the modern challenges of business.

The largest challenge to COBOL has been the wide-scale shift to the Microsoft Windows environment. Fujitsu COBOL offers a Windows-targeted design that is compatible with the Windows operating environment. The core technology, along with add-on features and products, will offer GUI design and execution; COM and DCOM support; creation and use of ActiveX objects; ADO; ASP support; CGI support; ISAPI integration; ODBC access; OLE connectivity; invocation of Windows system functions; and use of Microsoft Linkage Editor to produce standard Windows object code.

Fujitsu COBOL and PowerCOBOL can both be used to port existing legacy COBOL applications to the PC environment. These applications often perform better in this environment, freeing mainframes and midrange systems for other tasks. In some situations, large systems could be replaced by PCs and networked PC servers. In addition, Fujitsu COBOL systems are adaptable to the Internet platform with some modification.

Fujitsu COBOL is currently available.
