Ardent Brings Together MetaConnect Cooperative

Ardent Software Inc. (Westboro, Mass., www.ardentsoftware.com) today announced the MetaConnect Cooperative, a meta data integration program designed to allow warehouse tools to share meta data across the enterprise.

Through this cooperative, Ardent is developing MetaBrokers, direct interface with software tools, for release early next year. Ardent's MetaBrokers enable end-users to see and understand meta data lineage and the business rules that apply to warehoused data.

MetaConnect partners include BMC Software Inc. (Houston, www.bmc.com), Brio Technology Inc. (Palo Alto, Calif., www.brio.com), Business Objects SA (San Jose, Calif., www.businessobjects.com), Cognos (Burlington, Mass., www.cognos.com), Embarcadero Technologies Inc. (San Francisco, www.embarcadero.com), Information Advantage (Eden Prairie, Minn., www.informationadvantage.com), Informix Software Inc. (Menlo Park, Calif., www.informix.com), Seagate Software (Scotts Valley, Calif., www.seagatesoftware.com) and Whitelight Systems Inc. (Palo Alto, Calif., www.whitelight.com).

"With the MetaConnect Cooperative, Ardent is off-loading integration responsibility from warehouse tool vendors by writing the tool integration code ourselves," says Pete Fiore, vice president and general manager of Ardent Software's data warehouse business unit. "We believe that meta data management is and will continue to be a critical component in developing and maintaining the data warehouse."

At the core of the MetaConnect program is a new technology that enables the decomposition and recomposition of the atomic components of meta data.

"MetaConnect is a partner program that stands to benefit companies deploying multiple decision support systems," says Robert Craig, vice president of application architectures at the Hurwitz Group, and columnist for ENT. "Ardent and the participants in this cooperative are establishing a powerful, open infrastructure for sharing meta data between previously incompatible products." --Brian Ploskina, Assistant Editor
