Microsoft Outlook Lite Released for 'Lightweight' Android Devices

Microsoft on Monday announced the release of a new Outlook Lite application for so-called "lightweight" Android mobile phones.

Outlook Lite is just a 5MB download and is "optimized to run fast on all Android devices including devices with 1GB RAM," the announcement indicated. The app is said to be sparing on device batteries, and will work across various mobile networks, "including 2G and 3G networks worldwide."

Users of Outlook Lite get access to e-mails, contacts and calendar features. Possible e-mail sources include "Outlook.com, Hotmail, Live, MSN, Microsoft 365 and Microsoft Exchange Online accounts."

The Outlook Lite app is just available in some countries. It's not available in North America right now. Availability was listed as "Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, India, Mexico, Peru, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, Taiwan, Thailand, Turkey and Venezuela."

IT pros in those countries may want to block Outlook Lite because it doesn't currently work with app protection policies or mobile application management policies, according to a Microsoft 365 Admin Center message. The message was highlighted by Scott Strausbaugh in the comments section of Microsoft's announcement.

Strausbaugh, who describes himself as a "technical architect specializing in Microsoft 365," complained that "I have to reconfigure my APP policies because Microsoft released another half-complete app."
