Azure Local, IoT Operations Get AI-Powered Edge Computing Enhancements

Azure Local and IoT Operations received a broad set of updates this week as Microsoft moved to expand AI-enabled edge computing across hybrid and highly distributed environments.

The enhancements, announced by Douglas Phillips, president and chief technology officer of Microsoft Specialized Clouds, center on the company's adaptive cloud approach. The model extends Azure capabilities to customer datacenters and remote sites while keeping management unified through Azure Arc.

Azure Local reached general availability for several features aimed at organizations that run mission-critical workloads or operate under strict sovereignty requirements. Microsoft said the platform is designed for environments that need operational autonomy during outages or must retain sensitive data on premises.

"Organizations running mission critical workloads operate under stricter standards because system failures can often affect people and business operations at scale," Phillips wrote. "They must ensure control, resilience, and operational autonomy such that innovation does not compromise governance."

Microsoft 365 Local also became generally available, offering email, collaboration and communications within private clouds. The platform now supports NVIDIA's RTX PRO 6000 Blackwell Server Edition GPUs for on-premises AI workloads. Azure Migrate support for Azure Local is now generally available as well, providing lift-and-shift migration capabilities aimed at reducing deployment time and cost.

Several preview features for Azure Local were introduced, including AD-less deployments, rack-aware clustering, external SAN integration and multi-rack designs for larger estates. A disconnected operations mode now in preview allows Azure Local to function without internet connectivity, targeting manufacturing, healthcare and government sites where connections may be unreliable or prohibited. GSK is using Azure Local to process real-time data and run AI inference across manufacturing and research facilities worldwide.

Microsoft also rolled out new capabilities for its IoT platforms. Azure IoT Hub now includes Microsoft-backed X.509 certificate management to support secure identity lifecycle control. Integration with Azure Device Registry is intended to centralize identity, security and policy management across device fleets.

Azure IoT Operations added WebAssembly-powered data graphs for near real-time analytics and expanded protocol connectors covering OPC UA, ONVIF, REST/HTTP, SSE and MQTT.  Organizations can stream IoT data to Microsoft Fabric for analytics while continuing to process telemetry at the edge. Fabric IQ and Digital Twin Builder use models and knowledge graphs to enhance context for industrial data.

Arc management gained several preview additions, including a site manager that organizes resources by physical location for distributed monitoring. A new Google Cloud connector allows GCP resources to appear in Azure for unified governance across Azure, AWS and GCP. Azure Machine Configuration reached general availability, enforcing OS-level settings across Arc-managed servers, while Workload Identity for Arc-enabled Kubernetes clusters enables secure access to Azure resources using Entra ID without storing secrets.

AKS Fleet Manager preview integration supports centralized deployments and policy syncing across hybrid clusters. The Azure Key Vault Secret Store Extension for Arc-enabled Kubernetes clusters is now generally available, allowing clusters to cache secrets locally.
