Microsoft To Sunset Password Autofill in Authenticator App Starting in June

Microsoft plans to begin retiring the password autofill feature in its Authenticator app next month, as part of its broader shift toward more secure, passwordless sign-in methods.

The phased deprecation will unfold over three months:

  • June 2025: Users will no longer be able to save new passwords in the Authenticator app.
  • July 2025: Autofill capabilities and stored payment information, including credit card details, will be removed.
  • August 2025: All previously saved passwords will be permanently deleted from the app.

Microsoft is encouraging users to switch to Microsoft Edge for password management and adopt passkeys for improved security.

"Your saved passwords (but not your generated password history) and addresses are securely synced to your Microsoft account, and you can continue to access them and enjoy seamless autofill functionality with Microsoft Edge, a secure and user-friendly AI-powered web browser that offers features such as Microsoft Defender SmartScreen, Password Monitor, and InPrivate search," said Microsoft in its support documentation.

This move aligns with Microsoft's broader initiative to promote a passwordless future. In December the company shared insights into encouraging users to adopt passkeys, emphasizing their security benefits and user-friendly design. Passkeys allow users to sign in using biometrics or device PINs, reducing reliance on traditional passwords.

"Passkeys not only offer an improved user experience by letting you sign in faster with your face, fingerprint or PIN, but they also aren’t susceptible to the same kinds of attacks as passwords," said Microsoft. "Plus, passkeys eliminate forgotten passwords and one-time codes and reduce support calls."

Microsoft has also introduced native passkey support in the Authenticator app for both Android and iOS devices, enabling users to register and manage passkeys directly within the app.

For users who wish to retain access to their saved credentials, Microsoft recommends exporting passwords from the Authenticator app before the August cutoff and setting up Microsoft Edge on all devices to continue using autofill features.

Microsoft has also provided guidance for those that want to use a third-party password manager:

  • Export your passwords then import them into your chosen service.
  • Copy and paste addresses from Authenticator (tap and hold to Copy address) or export your addresses using Microsoft Edge.
  • For security reasons, you will need to manually recreate your payment info.
