Future Dynamics CRM Releases Losing Windows Server 2008 Support

Microsoft announced that the next Dynamics CRM version (and versions after that) will no longer support Windows Server 2008 and SQL Server 2008.

Dynamics CRM 2013 is the current version of the Microsoft customer relationship management (CRM) suite. Microsoft is expected to release an update to Dynamics CRM 2013 sometime this quarter. In a blog post Wednesday, the Dynamics CRM team listed the products that will not be supported beyond that update.

"As with other releases of CRM in the past, we find the need to add and remove items from our supported configurations list to keep current with technology, and allow us to provide you the best product possible," the team wrote.

Among the products that will no longer be supported are:

  • Windows Server 2008
  • Windows Server 2008 R2
  • SQL Server 2008
  • SQL Server 2008 R2
  • All versions of Windows Small Business Server (SBS)
  • Internet Explorer 8
  • Internet Explorer 9

"Our current plan for Microsoft Dynamics CRM Server is to target only Windows Server 2012, Windows Server 2012 R2, and SQL Server 2012 for the next release time frame," the blog stated.

SQL Server 2014 may eventually be added to that list of supported servers, according to the blog, but Microsoft has not yet decided either way.

It is important to note that the list of unsupported products applies only to the next major iteration of Dynamics CRM; it does not apply to the current Dynamics CRM 2013. Nor will it apply to the upcoming Dynamics CRM 2013 update, which will be delivered as a Service Pack 1 (SP1) for on-premises users and as an automatic update called "Spring '14 release" for CRM Online users.

This Microsoft Knowledge Base article lists the products that are currently being supported by Dynamics CRM 2013.

Microsoft has not indicated when the next major version of Dynamics CRM will arrive, though a Microsoft spokesperson said in an e-mail that it will be the next release after the SP1/Spring '14 update. The name of the release is currently "being finalized," the spokesperson said.
