Microsoft's 1TB Surface Book Sells Out
When Microsoft launched its Surface Book back in October, it caught the industry by surprise. Not only did no one see this sleek new design in laptop computing coming from Microsoft, it became a must-have system for numerous Windows enthusiasts for its potential performance. Perhaps the most sought-after configurations of the Surface Book by power users -- the high-end unit with a 6th Generation Intel Core i7 processor, 1TB of storage, 16GB RAM and an NVIDIA GPU – finally became available last week before very quickly selling out.
Initially when I looked up the fully loaded Surface Book on the Microsoft Store Web site yesterday, it wasn't available to order. Today the site is accepting orders with the caveat that Microsoft won't ship it before Feb. 5. Several stores confirmed that they don't yet have any systems in stock and when systems do come in, they're gone within hours.
A Microsoft spokeswoman confirmed the supply shortage. "We've seen strong demand for the 1TB Surface Book and have sold out of current inventory," she said in a statement.
Also now shipping is a fully loaded Surface Pro 4 tablet PC, which also sports the new Intel Core i7 processor, 1TB of storage and 16GB RAM. According to the microsoftstore.com site, that configuration, priced at $2,699 plus $129 for the keyboard, is ready to ship immediately.
Microsoft also added a gold version of its new Surface Pen (added to the choices of black, silver and dark blue). It comes with the Surface Book and Surface Pro 4 but additional pens, which also work with the older Surface Pro 3, cost $59.
