Microsoft Purview Data Governance Solution Launching in September

Microsoft's Purview Data Governance, the company's AI-powered solution designed to address governance and security challenges under one unified umbrella, will hit general availability on Sept. 1.

The solution, which Microsoft is touting as the "new Microsoft Purview experience," offers a single, organization-wide instance of the platform to unify governance, policy, compliance, risk and security efforts. Microsoft said It is essential for managing and governing all data, both structured and unstructured, across your data estate. This includes data from Azure, Microsoft 365, on-premises systems, multicloud environments and future SaaS applications.

Microsoft said that the new solution's main focus is to avoid the growing "fragmented point solutions" many organizations have deployed in their data management strategy, and aims to centralize labeling, audit logging, data classification, lineage and management over multiple platforms, including Microsoft Fabric.

"This experience is designed to help today’s data leaders solve their key governance and security challenges in an AI-powered, business-friendly, and unified solution.," said Rohan Kumar, corporate vice president for Microsoft Security Platform, Microsoft Purview and Microsoft Priva, in a blog post announcing the upcoming release. "Since the service launch in early April 2024, usage has skyrocketed by more than 400%, with more than 1,500 commercial entities actively participating in data governance activities."

As is Microsoft's current modus operandi, at the heart of the solution is AI. AI is integrated at every point to automate manual tasks, accelerate data curation and enhance data discovery. Data stewards can generate data quality rules automatically, and data consumers can find data products using natural language.

Microsoft has also announced that its Purview Data Governance solution will be receiving some new features when it hits general availability in September. First, a preview of Copilot embedded experience in Microsoft Purview will make its way into the platform. The feature will help assist data management in creating enterprise catalogs and enhance overall data search capabilities.

As for integration with its own data platform, custom report building from Fabric data and the ability to scan any Fabric-supported data in Purview will also be arriving with general availability. Finally, Microsoft will be expanding its partner network to include support for Studio and RELTIO, which Microsoft said will enhance data modeling and management capabilities.

Those looking to test drive Microsoft Purview Data Governance before its official release can still access the preview through the Microsoft Purview portal.
