Laplink Issues Free Windows 10 Migration Tool for Consumers

More Windows 10 Content:

Laplink today announced the availability of a free Windows 10 migration tool for consumers.

The new PCmover Express tool is only free for noncommercial uses, but Laplink also sells Professional and Enterprise editions for organizations to carry out their Windows 10 moves. The free tool comes with some restrictions, too. It only transfers settings, data and user profiles, but not applications. Users have to upgrade to PCmover Professional or Enterprise to have the app-moving capabilities.

There's another restriction on using the free PCmover Express tool. If the user is moving from an old PC to a new one, then the destination PC has to be running Windows 8.1 or Windows 10 to use the free tool, according to the fine-print description at Laplink's download page. For other kinds of transfers, Laplink sells its full PCmover Express product for $19.95.

The product works by installing an agent on the source and destination PCs. Users get a wizard for initiating the transfers, and they have an "undo" option if they need to backtrack. Laplink claims to provide "no-cost 24/7 transfer assistance" from a professional technician as part of its solution offerings, including for the free PCmover Express edition.

For larger organizations, Laplink's Enterprise edition for Windows 10 migrations is now available for trials, according to an announcement.

The PCmover product line and capabilities are described at this page. However, the page wasn't updated for Windows 10 at press time.
