IDC: Linux is Growing Fast

IDC's latest Worldwide Quarterly Server Tracker study shows that Linux server shipments increased 166 percent in the fourth quarter of 1999 to become the fastest-growing operating environment in the server market.

IDC (www.idc.com) found that Compaq Computer Corp. (www.compaq.com) held on to its top position worldwide with a market share of 25 percent and $84 million in factory revenue. IBM Corp. (www.ibm.com) was second in the Linux server distribution market, with 10 percent and $33 million in revenue, and Dell Corp. (www.dell.com) was third, with 7 percent and $23 million in revenue.

In a recent IDC survey of Linux users, a majority of respondents noted that their Linux servers suffered less than one hour of unexpected downtime per year. The study also found that the users are configuring their Linux servers to support Web applications, such as Web hosting, proxy/caching services, and e-mail.

"More than 40 percent of all spending on Linux servers is for Internet-related applications. Linux servers are now embedded in the Internet infrastructure and are strong competition for NT and Unix entry servers," said Michelle Bailey, research manager for IDC's Commercial Systems and Servers program.
