Oracle Makes Bid for SQL Server Users’ Data

Oracle Corp., in an assault on the as-yet-unreleased Microsoft Corp.’s SQL Server 7.0, announced a tool for the migration of SQL Server data to its Oracle8 database.
Oracle says the free tool, Oracle Migration Workbench, will make it faster and easier to move SQL Server data to Oracle8 than it will be to move the same data to SQL Server 7.0, when that product is available.
"We have a message for dissatisfied SQL Server customers – it’s faster and easier to migrate to Oracle8 today than it will be to migrate to SQL Server 7 tomorrow," Mark Jarvis, Oracle’s senior vice president for marketing, said in a statement.
Industry analysts were skeptical of Oracle’s migration-speed claim. "It remains to be seen," says Robert Craig of the Hurwitz Group (Framingham, Mass.). He said the announcement left questions about how applications written for SQL Server to work with the data would be transferred to Oracle8.
Oracle Migration Workbench is in beta and is expected to be generally available by the end of the year, along with an Oracle8 component also announced Wednesday, Oracle8 Wizards for Visual Studio. The suite of GUI wizards enhance Oracle8 by automating parts of the application development process on Windows NT. The wizards generate customizable, reusable code frameworks for Web, Visual Basic and C++ applications.
