Microsoft Makes SharePoint Embedded Commercially Available
SharePoint Embedded is now generally available, Microsoft announced Tuesday.
Launched as a public preview at last fall's European SharePoint conference, SharePoint Embedded is an API-based version of SharePoint that developers and ISVs can use to embed Microsoft 365 capabilities into their apps.
"SharePoint Embedded delivers Microsoft 365 superpowers as part of any app and consolidates all files and documents within a universal document layer," said Microsoft's Zach Rosenfield in a blog post Tuesday. "Apps that manage files and documents with SharePoint Embedded have a common set of collaboration, compliance, security, and AI capabilities, all designed to delight users and admins."
SharePoint Embedded apps can take advantage of all the key Microsoft 365 capabilities like Copilot, co-authoring and search. However, applications built with SharePoint Embedded run within the user organization's Microsoft 365 environment without taking up resources or storage space (for instance, from OneDrive).
It's also billed on its own pay-as-you-go model, separate from the larger Microsoft 365 environment, meaning that users can build apps with SharePoint Embedded without eating into their organization's Microsoft 365 usage limits.
For ISVs, this also means that they can "create their own partitions within a customer's M365 tenant, surfacing the same capabilities as part of their app," said Rosenfield.
Microsoft has already been using SharePoint Embedded internally, according to Rosenfield, to improve the experiences in apps like Microsoft Loop and Microsoft Designer.
News of SharePoint Embedded's general availability came on Tuesday during the opening day of the 2024 Microsoft Build conference. Also announced on Tuesday was the upcoming public preview of custom Copilots in SharePoint.
