Azure Portal Goes Down on June 9

Microsoft acknowledged an "issue impacting the Azure Portal" in a June 9 Twitter post.

Users of the Azure Portal, and other management tools such as Microsoft Intune, couldn't access it on Friday. Microsoft's team clocked the incident to about 1500 UTC, or 8:00 a.m. Pacific Time, on June 9. A warning was posted on the publicly available Azure Status page, but it has since been taken down. The portal refreshes itself every few minutes, clearing such indicators.

It's still possible to view the Azure Status page's June 9 history section, though. Here's Microsoft's description of the issue:

Impact Statement: Starting at 15:05 UTC on 9 Jun 2023, Azure customers may have experienced intermittent error notifications when trying to access the Azure Portal (portal.azure.com). Our monitoring indicates that this is healthy.
We have determined a potential root cause and engaged in different workstreams applying load balancing processes in order to mitigate the issue. Additional information will be updated here about this incident.

While that's not too clear, at least one Twitter poster had indicated after about an hour or two that the Azure Portal was accessible again.

The tracking site, Downdetector.com, showed a spike in crowd-sourced problem reports for Microsoft Azure happening around the estimated time frame, as shown in the following graphic:

Microsoft's services do go down, but June hasn't been a kind month for Microsoft and its customers. For instance, a June 5 Outlook on the Web service issue, which Microsoft ascribed to a problematic service update, had been fixed on the same day, but the problem apparently recurred. Microsoft's most recent Twitter update for the Outlook problems (Message Center post MO572252) suggested that there were no "further interruptions" to the Outlook service.
