SQL Server 2022 Preview Available for Linux

Microsoft this week noted that its SQL Server 2022 public preview, made available late last month, can now be tried on some Linux distros.

It's possible to try the SQL Server 2022 public preview on Red Hat Enterprise Linux and Ubuntu, as well as via a Docker image on Linux, according to this document. SUSE Linux Enterprise Server isn't yet supported to run the SQL Server 2022 preview, but it'll happen with "a later release."

The SQL Server 2022 public preview may be able to run on other Linux distros right now, Microsoft's document acknowledged. However, there are support implications for doing so, it warned.

The preview installation instructions vary per supported Linux distro, but "Microsoft maintains package repositories for installing SQL Server and supports installation via native package managers such as yum, zypper, and apt," according to this Microsoft FAQ document.

While SQL Server 2022 is still at the public preview stage, when it's commercially released, the licensing for its use on Windows Server and Linux servers will be the same, according to the FAQ:

SQL Server is licensed the same way for both Windows and Linux. In fact, you license SQL Server and then you can choose to use that license on the platform of your choice. For more information, see How to license SQL Server.

However, some SQL Server 2022 features available when using Windows Server aren't available when using Linux servers. Microsoft listed the unsupported features and services for Linux servers in this document section.
