Browsium Releases 4.0 Browser Management Products and New Client

Browsium updated its three Web browser management solutions on Monday and released a new client application that unifies them.

Redmond, Wash.-based Browsium makes enterprise solutions to address intranet or Web app dependencies that can't necessarily bend with the latest browser or plug-in release. Its products are designed for organizations that need to support so-called "legacy" technologies, such as older Java software, to keep things running.

The company's Ion solution provides such support for older Java versions, while its Catalyst product will switch between browser technologies depending on the Web application being used. Lastly, its Proton discovery and analytics tool shows overall technology dependency details, among other information.

The three solutions -- Ion, Catalyst and Proton -- can now be accessed via a new Browsium Client product. In addition, Browsium announced this week that the three solutions all have been updated to version 4.0, with some improvements.

Ion 4.0 now has the added capability to white-list certain Java functionality for specific Web sites, adding more granular security controls. It's possible to run different versions of Java side by side when using Ion 4.0. The Proton 4.0 analytics tool now has a Privacy Mode that can be used to keep user names and IP addresses anonymous. Proton 4.0 also has improved reporting of "ActiveX control usage," showing when it's not secure, Browsium's announcement explained.

The new Browsium Client essentially is an agent that can surface the functionality of Ion, Catalyst and Proton, depending on an organization's licensing. Organizations get simplified installation by using it. For instance, they just have to install the Browsium Client. End users won't see the client, which consumes "insignificant amounts of RAM and CPU," even when the three Browsium modules are configured, according to Browsium's FAQ.

The new 4.0 product releases are currently available as free upgrades for Browsium's customers that have "active maintenance and support agreements" in place. Browsium sells the three products as a suite or it licenses them separately. Browsium also offers free 30-day trial versions of the products.
