Microsoft Previews Sync Checking in Azure Active Directory Connect Health

Microsoft rolled out a preview this week of a new synchronization-checking capability in its Azure Active Directory Connect Health solution.

This capability enhances the Azure AD Connect Health tool so that it can now report if the Azure AD sync service is down, Microsoft announced today. The notifications show up on the main monitoring dashboard or IT pros can get alerts sent to them via e-mail.

The Azure AD Connect Health tool was released back in June. It's only available with Azure AD Premium subscriptions and is used to monitor premises-based identity infrastructure components. Azure AD Connect Health shows performance and use patterns for Azure AD applications and Office 365 services, with the preview adding a sync-monitoring capability.

Right now, the Azure AD Connect Health tool is just for use by organizations using Active Directory Federation Services (ADFS). ADFS is a Windows Server 2008/2012 role that enables single sign-on access to both on-premises resources and Web services.

The preview with the new sync-monitoring capability can be enabled by downloading and installing the latest Azure AD Connect solution here and then accessing the Azure AD Connect Health portal at this page. Once again, it only works if the organization has an Azure AD Premium subscription, although trial software (good for 30 days) can be downloaded at this page.

Microsoft announced a few other improvements that will be coming to the Azure AD Connect Health tool. It will get error-checking enhancements. It will get a trends analysis capability for troubleshooting purposes. Lastly, it will be able to show sync latency issues, Microsoft's announcement promised.
