Microsoft Yanks Patch After Users Experience Errors
Bulletin MS13-036 was pulled after incompatibility issues arose with a popular third-party antivirus program.
Microsoft's monthly security update prep apparently wasn't up to snuff for this week's April release.
Bulletin MS13-036 was pulled by Microsoft after it said Windows 7 customers complained of boot issues after the security update was installed.
"We've determined that the update, when paired with certain third-party software, can cause system errors," said Dustin Childs of Microsoft Trustworthy Computing in a blog post.
"As a precaution, we stopped pushing 2823324 as an update when we began investigating the error reports, and have since removed it from the download center."
Apparently, the third-party software that did not play nice with the new Microsoft update was Kaspersky Anti-Virus for Windows Workstations / Servers, versions 6.0.4.1424 and 6.0.4.1611. The incompatibility issues were confirmed by the security software firm.
Fortunately the security bulletin, which looked to resolve a privately reported issue in the Windows kernel that could lead to an elevation of privilege if an attacker had physical access to the targeted computer, was only rated "important," so implementation of the update should not be as high as the two "critical" items for the month.
For those that did push through the update, Microsoft advises that the update should be uninstalled as soon as possible, even though boot up errors did not occur for every updated system.
"Contrary to some reports, the system errors do not result in any data loss nor affect all Windows customers," said Childs. "However, all customers should follow the guidance that we have provided in KB2839011 to uninstall security update 2823324 if it is already installed."
