Citrix To Launch XenDesktop May 20

Citrix Systems announced Monday that its new enterprise desktop virtualization product, XenDesktop, will debut next month.

Currently in available in beta format, XenDesktop offers "on-demand" virtual desktops for both local and remote workers. The company is touting XenDesktop as an "end-to-end" desktop virtualization solution that "dramatically simplifies" the creation and management of virtual desktops.

"By separating applications from the desktop OS and provisioning them independently at runtime from new master images, end users get a fresh new desktop at each login that is fast, secure, personalized and free from the corruption and conflicts that plague traditional desktop solutions," the company said in its announcement of the launch. "XenDesktop further enhances end user experience by using a high-speed delivery protocol that provides instant access to Windows desktops and applications over any network, regardless of how far away users are from the corporate datacenter."

The product is part of Microsoft's and Citrix's previously announced collaboration on virtualization products. XenDesktop is designed for Windows Server 2008 and can be managed via Microsoft System Center. Both companies will market the product, Citrix said.

XenDesktop will debut on the first day of the company's Citrix Synergy event on May 20. The recommended retail price will start at $70 for each "concurrent" user.
