SP1 Released for Microsoft SharePoint Technologies

Microsoft this month released a Service Pack 1 for its SharePoint technologies to fix bugs and add support for new search functionality, larger file sizes and additional languages.
The company is delivering two service packs, which are available separately. One is for the Windows SharePoint Services (WSS) add-on to Windows Server 2003. The other, which can only be loaded after WSS SP1, is for Office SharePoint Portal Server 2003 (SPS).
The WSS service pack provides the capability to save and share documents as large as 2 GB. In addition to standard stability and security fixes, it also is billed as easing the patching process by enabling customers and partners to apply patches and hot fixes. Additionally WSS includes language templates for 11 languages on top of the 25 delivered WSS was released in October.
The SPS service pack improves on the product's ability to serve as an intranet portal by enhancing the ability to search for files across an organization. Microsoft boasts of improvements to search propagation, crawling reliability, a choice of keyword or best-bet search results, alert conditions, XML filtering and linguistic accuracy.
SP1 for SPS also introduces Microsoft's "Watson" quality control functionality. Watson is the technology behind the pop-up boxes asking for permission to send a report to Microsoft when an application crashes. With other products, Microsoft has been able to eliminate a large percentage of crashes caused by very few bugs due to the prioritization assistance it gets from the Watson-related reports.
