IDC: Server Market Gained in 2003

The worldwide server market got a slight bounce in 2003, according to preliminary numbers for the year compiled by IDC in a report published this month.

"After a double-digit decline in worldwide factory revenue in 2002, to $44.3 billion in server sales, the server market has stabilized, and preliminary 2003 results show the server market growing 2.2 percent to $45.3 billion," Lloyd Cohen, research director of IDC's Global Enterprise Server Solutions group, wrote in a statement.

"Much of the excess server inventory generated by the thousands of dot-coms going out of business has been absorbed, and the demand for additional IT equipment has returned," Cohen added.

IDC's server factory revenues generally include the server hardware along with operating systems, other software, cabling and other components that ship with a new server system.

The report is based on three quarters of data along with IDC's estimates for the fourth quarter. IDC will publish its finalized numbers for server revenues in March and June.

The preliminary estimate is contained in a $3,500 report called the "2003 Worldwide Server Market Review."
