HP Unveils Low-end Server for $550

Hewlett-Packard this week introduced an entry-level server starting at $550 for cost-sensitive, small- to medium-sized businesses. The server is part of the tc2100 series, which costs less than HP's flagship line of ProLiant industry-standard servers.

HP says the tc2100 server series is focused on providing simple setup, dependable performance and household-name service and support at a desktop price. The new model is called the tc2120.

The rock-bottom-priced model comes with a 1.8-GHz Intel Celeron processor, 128 MB of RAM and a 40-GB ATA drive. An $800 model sports an Intel Pentium 4 chip at 2.53 GHz, double the RAM and the same hard drive. For $950 total, HP replaces the ATA drive with a 36-GB SCSI drive. Adding an operating system pushes the price higher -- to $1,750 with Windows 2000 Server.

The server is or will be available with Windows Server 2003, Windows 2000 Server, Microsoft BackOffice Small Business Server, Red Hat Enterprise Linux AS, SuSE Linux or Novell NetWare.

HP offers an upgrade path for customers to move up to the ProLiant ML300 series of servers as their needs develop. The entry-level ProLiant ML300s start closer to $800 for stripped-down models.
