Intel Cuts Processor Prices

Intel Corp. cut prices by 7 percent to 20 percent Sunday on Pentium III desktop and server processors and a Celeron processor.

Intel's top lines of processors, the Pentium 4, Xeon, Pentium III Xeon and 64-bit Itanium processors were all unaffected by the current round of price cuts. Intel is supposed to have a new line of faster Pentium 4s ready for release in a few weeks.

A server processor line came in for some of the biggest price cuts -- the 0.13-micron Pentium III Processor-S. Intel slashed the price of the 1.26 GHz version 20 percent to $241 and the 1.13 GHz version 14 percent to $202. All prices listed are for each processor in 1,000-unit quantities.

The server/workstation Pentium III line featuring a 133 MHz front-side bus saw a cut in the 1 GHz/256k cache model, which dropped 14 percent to $149.

Intel dropped prices on seven desktop Pentium III processors, including the 0.13-micron 1.13 GHz Pentium III, which fell 10 percent to $173. Prices basically were cut on all Pentium III desktop processors slower than 1.2 GHz.

Intel selected one Celeron for a price cut, dropping the 960 MHz version with 128k cache by 7 percent to the basement of Celeron prices at $64. It joins four other Celerons ranging from 766 MHz to 900 MHz at that price level.
