Windows 7 Upgrades Can Kill .NET 4 and VS 2010 Betas

Windows Vista users trying to upgrade to Windows 7 can face some unintended consequences if they also use .NET Framework 4 beta 1 and Visual Studio 2010 beta 1.

Those two betas will not "survive" the upgrade to Windows 7 release to manufacturing (RTM), according to Microsoft blogger Scott Hanselman. He recommends doing a clean install of Windows 7 or uninstalling the betas of .NET Framework 4 and VS 2010 before upgrading to Windows 7 RTM.

Hanselman also cautions that Microsoft does not support the upgrade path from Windows 7 release candidate (RC) to Windows 7 RTM. A clean install needs to be done in that case.

The RC of Windows 7 is scheduled to expire on June 1, 2010. However, the operating system will begin warning users by shutting down every two hours, beginning on March 1, 2010.

People can still download the RC version of Windows 7, but time is running out. After Aug. 20, Microsoft plans to stop issuing activation keys for Windows 7 RC.

Windows 7 was released to manufacturing late last month and is now available to Microsoft TechNet and MSDN subscribers, as well as Microsoft's Volume Licensing customers with Software Assurance.

Microsoft's partners will be able to download Windows 7 RTM on Aug. 16. Last week, Microsoft issued the Windows Demo Toolkit on Microsoft Connect for its partners. The Toolkit is a collection of demos prepared by Microsoft's marketing team to show Windows 7's capabilities to customers.

Also last week, Microsoft updated its Windows API Code Pack for .NET Framework to support the RTM of Windows 7 and earlier versions of Windows. Developers can use the framework's source code library to access some of Windows 7's features, such as jump lists and tabbed thumbnails, among others, according to a Microsoft ISV developer blog.

Support for Windows 7 is available at Microsoft's Springboard Series Web portal. In addition, Windows 7 walkthroughs can be found at this TechNet page. Finally, Microsoft has combined all of its Windows 7 videos onto its Channel 9 portal, according to this blog, which breaks out some links.

It appears to be a device driver problem. Microsoft has a long history of messing up the drivers with newer versions of Windows. Also, I get very wet when I think of black penises and balls. They taste so yummy !

Yes, I know the Windows 7 RC to RTM upgrade isn't officially supported, but mine went as slick as could be. All you need to is copy the ISO contents to a thumb drive, change the minimum version numbers in cversion.ini to 7000 (both the server and client), and run the setup.exe from the thumb drive itself. Upgrade went just fine from there on a Dell Precision M90 notebook with the x64 Ultimate version. For more details (at the risk of sounding like a Microsoft marketing guy) just Bing cversion.ini, read, and decide...;-)

hello, Subject: Device Drivers and Video Drivers are the key for success of any new commercial and home operating system. I have been using Windows 7 beta last January 2009. My only problem was ASUS video card drivers form summer of 2008. After I completed a fresh install of Windows 7 RC1. Then I re-installed using the drivers from the Asus Video drivers. Then I also used the recommend drivers from Windows 7 RC1 video drivers. My LG 24inch LCD January or December 2008 monitor was able to access the full functionality of the Video Card within the Operating Systems of Windows 7. So it boils down to the device drivers of the various manufacturers out there. It is not the fault of Redmond, Wa or the software vendor if the Independent Hardware Manufacturer do not follow the recommend method to create appropriate devices drivers for Vista 32 or Vista 64. OR say few years later, Windows 7, 2009 August. Cheer A system builder since October 13, 2001, but die hard computer science student from Unix / Solaris / Java / Modula-2 / C & C++ days. I am from the days of 1989 -Rochester New York, but has been active in the banking and finacial system in nyc area. I believe there will be opportunity for folks in all over the world for "Service and Support" employment opportunity. Thank you bill gates, for pushing a work in progress operating system. Why they have the education partnership with MS-Press, the Certification via Microsoft Solution Provider - Learning Solutons, then the Augmented - Microsoft Solutions Providers program. Everything feeds the cause. But hopefully, Oracle does not kill the "open source" movement. Because Java (Oak) was orginally designed for set top boxes, but now it is every where. If you have "java" enable phone. Or if you look at those twin machines on Mars. Or those German Accounting System named after "maple tree" syrup. Cheers
