Ransomware: Past, present, and future

Simply put, a bad actor plants a virus onto a device – often via phishing – which either encrypts, obfuscates or otherwise denies access to files, or locks the user out of their system entirely. In an attack on an enterprise, the malware can also move laterally from system to system until you lose access to critical data and services across your entire organization.
