IBM and Vicom Join to Improve Netfinity Server Storage

Aiming at the increasing load of data stored from Windows NT platforms, IBM Corp. on Tuesday announced a project with Vicom Systems Inc. (Mountain View, Calif., www.vicom.com) to improve storage on clustered IBM Netfinity servers.

The solution combines the IBM 7133 Serial Disk System with Vicom’s RAID disk controller, the Vicom UltraLink 2000i for Netfinity 7000 servers.

"The world is starting to move to clustered servers," says Bill Pinkerton, business line manager for open systems storage in the IBM Storage Systems Division. Pinkerton referred to a February study by the industry analyst firm International Data Corp. (Framingham, Mass.) that found that the clustering market is expected to increase from about 10 percent of the Intel-based server marketplace this year to 25 percent by the end of 1999.

IBM says storage users can start by configuring only a few disk drives and add disk drives as necessary to a capacity of 582 GB without taking operations offline. – Scott Bekker, Staff Reporter
