More Google Madness
Bill Cosby had a great routine in the '60s (yeah, I was a kid then) about hoof and mouth. Eric Schmidt has a similar affliction -- foot in mouth. Schmidt's latest bonehead comments involve Internet anonymity. Now remember, Schmidt had a conniption when a Web site published details of his life -- discovered through his own Web site!
Having somehow forgotten that horror, Eric now argues that none of us should be anonymous on the Web. (How can we be, when you take overhead shots of our houses and street-level views of our coming and goings?)
Schmidt's argument is that anonymous people on the Internet can do bad things. Duh. So the answer is to expose us all? Wouldn't that be a search engine's dream?
I do agree with Eric in one small sense: I wouldn't mind if you had to prove your age or identity to see the really crazy on the Web. That would be a kind of tier where my kids couldn't browse for the truly hideous, but consenting adults could.
