SUSE Cloud 2.0 Includes Hyper-V Support

Linux-based SUSE Cloud 2.0, which was released last week, now includes "full support" for Microsoft's Hyper-V hypervisor.

The Hyper-V integration adds to existing KVM and Xen hypervisor support, as well as "technical preview" support for VMware ESXi in SUSE's solution. The multiple hypervisor support in SUSE Cloud 2.0 is kind of expected as SUSE's platform for deploying private clouds is based on OpenStack Grizzly, although integrating hypervisor support takes collaboration effort. In this case, the integration was carried out with the help of Cloudbase Solutions, which helps with OpenStack on Windows.

"By including Microsoft Hyper-V support in SUSE Cloud 2.0, SUSE is making it easier for customers to deploy Microsoft Hyper-V and OpenStack," said Alessandro Pilotti, Cloudbase Solutions' CEO, CTO and founder, in a released statement. "At the same time, the solution is fully supported, which is important to our customers planning to deploy production clouds."

Microsoft also collaborated, as announced in May.

SUSE Cloud 2.0 also includes the integration of Dell's Crowbar, which is an open source deployment solution for hardware. Crowbar can be used to deploy private clouds using mixed hypervisors.

"Adding the ability to install Microsoft Hyper-V nodes by Crowbar as part of the Dell SUSE Cloud Solution, Powered by OpenStack, gives our customers using Microsoft Hyper-V Server 2012 and Windows Server 2012 the same simple install process that our Kernel-based Virtual Machine and Xen customers have been enjoying," said Forrest Norrod, Dell's vice president of worldwide servers, in a released statement.

SUSE Cloud 2.0 also includes Amazon storage API support using technical previews of open source Ceph and Ceph Rados Gateway. Ceph is distributed file system, while Ceph Rados Gateway is an object storage service that works with Amazon S3 and OpenStack Swift.

SUSE, a spinoff of the Attachmate Group, offers 24x7 support for its SUSE Cloud 2.0 product, as well as SUSE Studio for image building and SUSE Manager for monitoring Linux environments.
