My Server App Released for Managing Windows Server 2012 Essentials

Microsoft this week announced the release of its My Server App for Windows 8 or Windows RT, which works with Windows Server 2012 Essentials.

This free app can be found at the Windows Store here. Alternatively, users of Windows 8 or Windows RT devices can search for it by opening the Windows Store App on their device and using the Charms bar to search for "My Server," according to a Microsoft spokesperson.

Microsoft also offers a My Server App for Windows Phone 7.5 and Windows Phone 8 devices, which can be accessed at the Windows Phone Store here. It's also free to use.

The My Server App is but one of a few ways to access shared folders when using Windows Server 2012 Essentials, which Microsoft released in October. Other possibilities include using the Launchpad application or using a Web browser with Microsoft's Remote Web Access protocol, which is set up via a wizard.

Users of the My Server App can perform tasks such as getting alerts and accessing shared files. They can also manage devices and users, and even reset user passwords -- provided that they have administrative privileges on Windows Server 2012 Essentials, according to Clinton Ho, a lead program manager on the Windows Server Essentials team, in a blog post.

Ho suggested that it is possible to open recently accessed server files and make changes, even while offline, using the My Server App. Those changes will then get synchronized when the user reconnects online. Media files also can be accessed and played using the My Server App.

So far, the My Server App is just for Windows Server 2012 Essentials and Windows Phone. It's not clear if Microsoft will make one that works with Windows Server 2012.
