OpenNebula 3.2 Drivers Released for Microsoft Hyper-V
The OpenNebula project last week released its latest drivers supporting Microsoft's Windows Server Hyper-V hypervisor.
The drivers, now at version 3.2, support SCSI disks, improve the CD ROM context mechanism and enable a "direct connection to Windows Servers nodes without requiring a proxy machine," according to an OpenNebula blog post. It's an enhancement over last month's release (version 3.1.80 beta 2), which added Windows Remote Management support.
With the 3.2 drivers installed, an OpenNebula cloud that uses Hyper-V can be managed using multiple management tools, such as the command-line interface in OpenNebula, various Web interfaces, Sunstone and other OpenNebula-supported cloud interfaces. The one caveat in the release notes is that virtual local area network (VLAN) tagging isn't supported yet.
"The drivers enable OpenNebula to perform basic VM lifecycle management (create, monitor, shutdown) and do not support VLAN tagging," according to the release notes for version 3.2.
OpenNebula is an Apache open source project providing management resources for datacenters, based on private, public or hybrid cloud architectures. The project is hypervisor agnostic, and also supports VMware's hypervisors, Citrix's Xen hypervisor and Kernel-Based Virtual Machine (KVM) hypervisors used with Linux-based servers.
Microsoft announced support for Hyper-V on OpenNebula back in September. The support is part of Microsoft's interoperability outreach toward open source software, especially where mixed server environments are in use.
