Kinect Crowned Fastest-Selling Consumer Device by Guinness

While Windows Phone 7 devices may not be flying off the shelf, the company has had monumental success with its other big-name consumer product released during the same time period -- the Microsoft Kinect.

Guinness Book of Records confirmed yesterday that the Xbox 360 addon that allows for motion and voice control sold over 8 million units in its first 60 days on the shelf, making it the fastest-selling consumer electronics device in the world-record tracking company's history.

"The sales figures here speak for themselves," said Gaz Deaves, editor of Gunness World Records 2011 Gamer's Edition. "We can confirm that no other consumer electronics device sold faster within a 60-day time span, an incredible achievement considering the strength of the sector."

The record number of units sold (an average of 133,333 devices per day since its release in November 2010) strips both the iPhone and the iPad from the top spot for this category.

While the Kinect's usage has been primarily focused on gaming and entertainment, Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer used the device to demonstrate how businesses will be able to process information and communicate in a virtual setting without physically interacting with a computer in a keynote speech yesterday at the CERAWeek energy conference in Houston. He also commented that the same technology found in the Kinect device will soon be coming to personal computers and mobile devices.
