Next Friday marks the sixth annual System Administration Day.

Remember to mark your calendars again: Next Friday, July 29, is System Administrator Appreciation Day.

The non-observed holiday, celebrated on the last Friday of July, is the brainchild of software consultant and “sysadmin” (system administrator) Ted Kekatos. Now in its sixth year running since 1999, the special day aims to recognize the hard work of sysadmins around the world by showering them “with expensive sports cars and large piles of cash in appreciation of their diligent work,” it says on Kekatos’ Web site dedicated to promoting the holiday.

If not as lavish, coworkers can peruse a list of suggested gifts on the site which includes everything from a home theater system to gift certificates. Participating Web site ThinkGeek.com suggests more practical gifts like IT-related t-shirts, mugs and office toys. Or consider throwing something as decent as an ice cream and cake party, which is what one major defense contractor firm did for its 200-strong IT department.
