Citrix Posts Hotfixes for Problem Caused by Windows 2000 Update Rollup

Citrix this week posted hotfixes for two of its products that were crashing after users installed Microsoft Update Rollup 1 for Windows 2000 Service Pack 4.

Users reported problems on the Citrix Knowledge Center and on the Shavlik patch management mailing list shortly after Microsoft released Update Rollup 1, a collection of more than 50 security fixes for the five-year-old Windows 2000 operating system.

Citrix confirmed the problem in a Knowledge Center article posted the day after the Update Rollup was released. Citrix had offered some workarounds, including a registry edit or uninstalling the Update Rollup, prior to the hotfixes becoming available on Wednesday.

Some users experienced blue screens when trying to connect to Citrix MetaFrame XP 1.0 for Windows 2000 and Citrix MetaFrame Presentation Server 3.0 for Windows 2000 Server.

The Update Rollup appeared to interfere with the Citrix ICA protocol, but not with RDP, Microsoft's protocol.
