Intel Gains Processor Share

Market research house IDC reports that Intel piled on a few more points of share in the second quarter to its dominant position in the worldwide x86 PC processor market.

Intel improved its market share by 1.2 percentage points to 81.6 percent of the market. Intel's primary chipmaking rival, AMD, fell by 1.1 percentage points of share to 17.2 percent.

Intel's strongest gains came in the mobile PC processor segment, where the chip giant increased its market share by nearly 3 percent. "Intel's ramp up of the Pentium M processor, part of its Centrino platform, showed in a sequential increase in mobile processor shipments," IDC analyst Shane Rau said in a statement.

AMD's mobile shipments fell off by 25 percent sequentially, Rau said. Intel ended up with 88.1 percent of the mobile PC processor segment, while AMD wound up with 10.6 percent.
