HP ProLiant Packs 4 Processors in 2U

HP this month began shipping an ultra-dense ProLiant server that packs four Intel Xeon processors into 2U of rack space.

The new HP ProLiant DL560 also sports reduced power consumption, with the ability to operate fully loaded on less than 550 watts of power.

The company says the server represents a combination of the density and serviceability of its two-processor ProLiant DL380 server family and the performance and reliability of the four-processor DL580 server family.

On the density front, HP claims the DL560 is the first server from a tier-one vendor (presumably HP, Dell and IBM) to offer four processors in 2U of rack space. Serviceability features include an integrated Lights-Out processor, system health LEDs and unit ID lights.

For performance and reliability, HP touts support for up to 12 GB of RAM, PCI-X architecture, Wide Ultra SCSI, Gigabit networking, redundant components in the dense chassis and on-line spare memory.

Suggested uses for the server include mail/messaging, clustered applications and enterprise resource planning.

HP will support Windows Server 2003 on the server when the operating system ships next month. Other supported operating systems include Windows 2000 Advanced Server, Red Hat Linux Advanced Server, SuSE Linux and Novell NetWare.
