Hewlett-Packard Expands OpenView Family

Hewlett-Packard this week introduced new products based on its HP OpenView IT management framework that included components and plug-ins for managing service level agreements, Web services and storage.

Although HP has been working on its own approach to Web services, the company appears to be taking a fairly agnostic approach to Web services within the OpenView unit.

A new HP OpenView Transaction Monitor works with both J2EE and Microsoft .NET application infrastructures. Designed for automating the isolation of performance bottlenecks in Web services application infrastructures, the monitor analyzes the path of transactions to locate network, server or application bottlenecks. It works with Microsoft .NET, BEA WebLogic and IBM WebSphere.

HP also introduced "Smart Plug-ins" for webMethods, IBM WebSphere and Sun ONE Web Services. Those plug-ins come on top of available plug-ins for Microsoft .NET and BEA WebLogic.

New products and components not related to Web services are an HP Service Desk, HP OpenView Storage Data Protector and HP OpenView Storage Area Manager.

The HP Service Desk provides information about service level objectives to other tools that measure and monitor infrastructure performance and availability.

HP OpenView Storage Data Protector focuses on rapid recovery from disasters through an emphasis on using disk for backup and restore of an organization's most critical data. The solution also supports tape-based recovery for less urgent data.

The HP Open Storage Area Manager is for controlling and monitoring multi-vendor storage resources. The software has been expanded to support storage devices or interconnects from HP, IBM, Hitachi Data Systems, XIOtech, Brocade, Chaparral, Inrange, Nishan and Vixel.
