Dell Puts Intel Xeons in New Rack-Dense Servers

Dell Computer Corp. made a new rack-optimized server available this week with an option for including two Intel Xeon processors at speeds up to 2.4 GHz.

Dell positioned the 2U PowerEdge 2650 as driving down rack-dense server prices with an entry point around $2,400.

"[The] PowerEdge 2650 is ideal for e-mail, file/print and Web serving, as well as for high performance computing clusters, storage area networks and small-scale, departmental database applications," according to Dell. Microsoft will use the servers in its efforts with Dell to introduce InfiniBand technology to the market for enterprise customers.

The system is expandable to up to 6 GB of RAM and up to 365 GB of internal storage via five SCSI hard drives. It includes dual, embedded PCI-X gigabit network interface cards, remote access for server management, front-access KVM and new memory technologies for availability. Embedded RAID with 128 MB of battery-backed cache is an option.

The system can be ordered with Windows 2000 Server, Windows 2000 Advanced Server or Red Hat Linux. It is certified for Novell NetWare and Windows NT 4.0.
