NEW ORLEANS -- Microsoft Corp. released the latest of its .NET Enterprise Server line, Commerce Server 2002, on Wednesday at TechEd.

The interim release brings tight integration with Visual Studio .NET, enhances the product's global commerce capabilities and improves upon security.

The January beta release was basically feature complete, says L.J. Germinario, technical product manager for Microsoft's .NET Enterprise Servers. However, Microsoft did announce new pricing and added a software development kit to the server, which competes with e-commerce platform offerings from IBM, Oracle, Broadvision and others.

Commerce Server 2002 is split into an Enterprise Edition and a Standard Edition. The Enterprise Edition will cost $20,000 per processor with unlimited CPU capabilities. Along the same lines, the Enterprise Edition is newly certified for Windows 2000 Datacenter Server, becoming the third Microsoft .NET Enterprise Server to gain that certification. SQL Server 2000 and Exchange 2000 Server are also certified. Datacenter Server can be run on servers with up to 32 processors.

The Standard Edition costs $7,000 per CPU and carries a two-processor limit.

Among the components of the new Software Development Kit are sample code for integrating Commerce Server with Microsoft's Passport authentication service and integrators for Microsoft's BizTalk Server 2000.
