HP Cuts Prices on IA-32 Servers, Appliances

Hewlett-Packard Co. dropped prices from 11 percent to 31 percent on some models of IA-32 dense servers and server appliances on Tuesday.

Affected rack-dense servers include the LP1000r and the LP2000r. HP positions both models as Windows- or Linux-based servers for infrastructure functions such as proxy, caching, DNS, firewall and load balancing. The servers ship with Pentium III processors as fast as 1.4 GHz.

The HP Server Appliance line also comes in for price cuts of 14 percent to 29 percent. Reduced-cost appliances include those for Web-hosting, Web caching, streaming media caching, traffic management and VPN.

In a statement, the director of the HP Network Server Division, Marc Jourlait, said the cost reductions resulted from improvements in component costs and supply chain enhancements.

The price cuts follow recent aggressive moves by IBM Corp. to compete with Dell Computer Corp. on price for entry-level IA-32 servers.
