EMC-Microsoft Tighten Relationship with Center

EMC Corp. and Microsoft Corp. tightened their long relationship this month with the opening of an EMC Windows Competency Center.

The center, located about 30 miles northeast of Atlanta in Duluth, Ga., will be used to demonstrate storage networking best practices for the Windows platform and to simulate specific customer environments for pre-installation testing, according to EMC.

Duluth is the location of one of EMC's DG, or Data General, offices around the country. EMC bought Data General in 1999 for Data General's Clariion storage products. The Clariion line gave EMC a stronger foothold in the Windows platform storage market, which had been a lower-end market than EMC usually targeted.

EMC has been working with Microsoft to support Windows environments with its products since 1995, and the two companies formed a strategic alliance at the time of the Windows 2000 launch in February 2000. EMC also operates a Windows engineering lab in Bellevue, Wash., next to the Microsoft campus.

Another recent EMC move affecting Windows platform users was an agreement with Dell Computer Corp. to OEM an EMC Clariion line of storage systems that Dell will sell and co-brand.
