Microsoft Releases W2K Security Rollup

Microsoft Corp. on Wednesday released a rollup patch of all security fixes issued for Windows 2000 since the release of Service Pack 2.
The patch, called the Windows 2000 Security Rollup Package 1 (SRP1) includes 43 specific patches. Many of them have been addressed in security bulletins, but several are new fixes for minor problems, Microsoft says.
"This demonstrates Microsoft's continued commitment to deliver, under the Strategic Technology Protection Program (STPP), comprehensive security roll-up packages providing customers with an easy way to update their environments and eliminating the need for multiple reboots," Microsoft said in a statement.
SRP1 can be installed on Windows 2000 Professional, Windows 2000 Server or Windows 2000 Advanced Server after Service Pack 2.
Microsoft issued a similar security rollup for Windows NT 4.0 after cancelling plans for a Service Pack 7.
However, the security rollup for Windows 2000 appears to be a new track parallel to service pack delivery.
Security bulletins released after MS01-52 will be addressed in an SRP2.
The new security rollup follows a recent memo by Microsoft Chief Software Architect Bill Gates that security must become a higher priority at Microsoft.
