Chips Speed Up Again

Intel Corp. and AMD Corp. issued new processors this week in their ongoing battle for market share.
Intel on Tuesday released a faster standard server processor, a Pentium III at 1.4 GHz with 512 KB of L2 cache. That processor sells for $315 each in 1,000-unit quantities. The 0.13-micron processor is expected to power system offerings this quarter from Compaq, Dell, Fujitsu-Siemens, Hewlett Packard, IBM and NEC.
Earlier in the week, Intel refreshed its top desktop processor line, the Pentium 4, with 0.13-micron versions and a higher speed model.
A new 2.2 GHz chip with 512 KB of L2 cache sells for $562 each in 1,000-unit quantities. A 2.0 GHz version sells for $364 in 1,000-unit quantities.
Intel cleared the way for the 0.13-micron Pentium 4s over the weekend by dropping prices on its previous top-of-the-line Pentium 4, a 0.18-micron, 2.0 GHz model, by 15 percent to $342.
AMD also refreshed its desktop processor line with a new top model this week. The AMD Athlon XP processor 2000+ is available immediately in systems from Compaq and will be included in systems from HP and MicronPC in the United States.
The processor sells for $339 in 1,000-unit quantities.
