Systems Integrators Roll Out Microsoft Intranet Packages

Cap Gemini Ernst & Young, Compaq Computer Corp., Hewlett-Packard Co. and Avanade Inc. on Tuesday all came forward with knowledge worker-focused intranet offerings based on Microsoft Corp. technologies, including SharePoint and Office XP.

Microsoft calls its intranet infrastructure the Microsoft Solution for Intranets (MSI). Products under the MSI umbrella are SharePoint Portal Server, SharePoint Team Services, Office XP, SQL Server, Windows 2000 and Windows Media Technologies. MSI includes prescriptive architecture and deployment guidance.

Each of the systems integrators developing solutions atop MSI has its own spin on the program.

Cap Gemini Ernst & Young calls its program n-Portal. It combines MSI with Cap Gemini Ernst & Young’s existing knowledge management experience.

The Compaq Solution for Intranets emphasizes Compaq hardware as much as the solution package. Compaq is looking to sell its ProLiant servers and StorageWorks products in a portal solution.

HP is also looking to sell hardware with its HP Collaboration Portal Solutions. The package consists of hardware, software, support services and consulting help to design and implement customized portals.

Avanade, the joint consulting venture between Microsoft and Accenture, will offer integration services through a proprietary framework called the Avanade Component Architecture or ACA.Portal.

H&R Block is an early adopter of MSI.
